01Who I am

About

Nipun Rautela

I'm a backend engineer working on large-scale distributed systems: event-driven services, self-healing active-active clusters, cross-region schedulers, and the migration machinery that lets platforms change shape underneath their users without going offline. Most of what I build is orchestration at volume, where a request is not one call but hundreds of moving executions that all have to land.

The work is mostly the unglamorous half of a backend: designing service boundaries and APIs, moving live state between two architectures without dropping any of it, rate limiting the callers that would otherwise take the platform down, and putting enough observability in place to know what actually happened at 3am. Around that sits the ordinary craft, tests worth trusting, pipelines that deploy without ceremony, and cloud infrastructure and CI provisioned as code rather than by hand.

I also spend time on the tooling that makes all of this testable: simulators that stand in for systems too expensive to hit for real, and, lately, tool-calling LLM agents layered over them so the tedious parts of the job take minutes instead of an afternoon.

The through-line is systems other people depend on. I'm drawn to the problems where correctness under failure matters more than throughput on a good day: in-flight state you can't drop, cutovers that can't take an outage, and jobs that have to fire across two data centres and still run exactly once.

Experience

Full résumé
  1. Software Engineer · Visa

    Oct 2025 - Present

    Bangalore, IndiaFull-time

Breaking an Ansible automation orchestration platform serving 25,000 executions a day out of its monolith and into event-driven processors, without ever taking it down.

    • Worked on the re-architecture of a large Activiti BPMN and polling-based monolith serving 25,000 executions a day into segregated event-driven processors backed by custom self-healing active-active Hazelcast queues, cutting platform-level execution overhead by over 60% and code smell by 70%.
    • Designed and built a parking-lot system that migrated every in-flight execution onto the new architecture with full state reconstruction, making the event-driven cutover a zero-downtime deployment.
    • Designed and implemented a token-bucket rate limiter scoped at user and global level, enforced by annotation and overridable via API, closing off denial-of-service by internal callers while still allowing elevated access where it was warranted.
    • Replaced a misfire-prone custom Quartz setup with a cross-region dual-DC job scheduler, taking misfires to zero and tightening trigger lag from ±20s to ±5s.
    • Found non-compliant handling of the change life-cycle in the application and drove the fix with the ITSM team, documenting and remediating the flow before it became a penalty.
    • Built an AWX simulator with DSL-driven scenario routing across database operations, delays and API responses, making regression and performance testing possible at 50 executions per minute without loading production Ansible.
    • Layered a tool-calling LLM agent over the simulator with custom native tools, so engineers can author simulations in plain language, taking authoring time from 30 minutes to under 5.

  2. Software Engineer · Societe Generale Global Solution Centre

    Feb 2024 - Oct 2025

    Whitefield, BangaloreFull-time

Platform and backend work across a large regulated estate: cloud migration, CI/CD, and the database jobs underneath it.

    • Architected multiple on-premise applications onto Azure (AKS, Azure PostgreSQL, DNS, certificates and Key Vault) and automated the provisioning, cutting deployment effort by 80%.
    • Automated the blue-green AKS migration end to end, covering resource migration, network redirection and access re-provisioning, cutting per-cluster cutover from 4 hours to 1.
    • Led the migration of every Docker image from Mirantis Secure Registry to Harbor, writing the Jenkins pipelines and Dockerfiles for the new workflow.
    • Owned the team's other structural migrations end to end: Nexus to JFrog for artifacts, and Jenkins to GitHub Actions for CI.
    • Optimized C-shell and pl/pgsql database scripts by parallelizing independent business logic, taking a nightly job from 5.5 hours to 3.
    • Migrated Excel-based VBA solutions to Python cloud functions, removing platform dependency entirely and backing them with tests at 70% coverage.
    • Built features across Java/Spring Boot services with React and Angular front-ends in an agile team, and added API-based data fetching for compliance by decomposing complex SQL queries while holding response-time overhead under 5%.
